Elysium got me N+ for the Nintendo DS this Christmas, and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying battling my way through the 300 single player levels, which are all varied and fun. I’ve unfortunately not had chance to try the multiplayer, and the online N+ Community facility just refuses to work for me, which is annoying.

Today I got an Atmosphir beta invite, and I decided to try installing it on Linux first, before Mac or Windows. There were a couple of things I needed to do in order to get it to work correctly on my 64-bit Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex box.
game: error while loading shared libraries: libpq.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
This can be fixed by downloading the 32-bit package of libpq5 (much the same way as I did for Flash Player 10) and extracting it and copying the file libpq.so.5 into the Atmosphir directory. At the bottom of this post I have provided a copy of this file (and the file in the next step) for those that don’t want to go through the faff of downloading the .deb and extracting it themselves.

The same method applies, download the 32-bit package of libgnutls26 and extract the libgnutls.so.26 file, again I’ve provided it in the archive at the bottom of this post.

After a quick bit of googling, I discovered people get the same error when trying to use Skype with PulseAudio, and there is a quick fix solution available which also does the trick for Atmosphir. Great!
Hope this helps anyone that has any problems with the new Atmosphir Beta. I’ve already played it a bit, and I think it’s a great idea and seems great fun to play, and works brilliantly on Linux which is awesome to see. If you don’t have a beta invite yet, head on over to the Atmosphir site and fill in the registration form, they are giving out beta invites over the next couple of weeks, so you might get lucky!

Spore was without doubt the most anticipated game of the year. The game itself has blown away the people who have played it, but the DRM encouraged thousands to get their copy illegally. Already Spore has been downloaded more than 500,000 times on BitTorrent, and this number is increasing rapidly… (via TorrentFreak)
To spin EAs words around about DRM stopping piracy – do they (and us?) think more people would have pirated Spore if it had not had DRM? For example all those people justifying pirating it because of the DRM; those people making a point.

I’m pleased to see the contrast in news this week: Spore has been released in both the UK and the US, and Stardock have sold over 500,000 total copies of Sins of a Solar Empire. Why is this a contrast? Because of the differing views of piracy, DRM, and consumers.

I’m currently watching my girlfriend, Elysium, play Spore on her computer. She’s currently in the creature editor, adding new parts to her creature to make it stronger. It’s a four-legged create with lots of horns, and a weird pincer mouth, and stalks for eyes.
So far we’ve been playing for a few hours, and we’re approaching the end of the creature phase. You’d be surprised at how long it takes to get through the stages, so far videos and demos have shown it to be a relatively quick process to the space age, but in reality it takes quite a while. Also, it’s pretty though. You can’t just walk (or swim) around killing whatever you please, there’s plenty of other creatures out there to get you, and plenty stronger than you (we’ve already seen an ‘epic dragon’, which had 1000 health while we only had 46!
