While I wait for itunes to update to version 8 I thought I’d take some time to try out the Wordpress app for iphone. It also gives me a chance to practise typing, something I probably need considering i’m quite a heavy texter (hell I went for the unlimited text bolt-on for an extra £7.50). I think I’ll get the hang of it, though I’ll probably find myself missing my T9 dictionary input…

I’ve just moved my feed over to Feedburner to get some statistics for it (as Google Analytics doesn’t analyse my feed). It was really easy thanks to this guide on the FeedBurner help centre, and this plugin it suggests for WordPress. Hopefully should start getting some statistics soon. If anyone has any trouble with the feed (it should transparently redirect), let me know.

Two points, firstly: Google Analytics doesn’t yet distinguish between Google Chrome and Firefox yet. Crazy, when plenty of other places automagically did (their excuse of ‘only launched externally today’ is poor, Google Analytics belongs to Google, right?)

Secondly, people actually click the huge list of links on the Official Google Blog, because my stats look like this for yesterday:

I personally just use the WordPress admin page, coupled with the Turbo setting using Google Gears for Safari Beta to try and make it a bit more snappy. But I can understand the clamour for a desktop client. I recommend giving MarsEdit or Ecto a try on Mac OSX (both are trialware), and Windows Live Writer on Windows (free). There’s also a relevant Lifehacker article with more comments and programs to try.

I haven’t posted anything in the past few days, to be honest things have been rather quiet – newsfeeds have been quiet so I’ve had nothing much interesting to post.

A few months ago I read a blog article (which I am now frantically trying to find to link to) talking about making a simple homepage for your name – to use in comment posts and forums – containing links to places you exist on the Internet. Why? Because if people are interested in what you have to say, then they can follow you on whatever service they like (e.g. Twitter, Flickr, or just your blog) which is better than just sending them to your blog, or your Flickr. When I read it, it sounded like a good idea, so I set one up. It uses a really simple design, with large fonts and a small ‘about me’ paragraph. Today Toby emailed me asking if he could borrow some of the code to make his own, which I was fine with. I think it’s a great idea, and if you have any sort of Internet presence, it’s well worth doing.

If you don’t want to make one yourself, services exist to do similar things, such as ClaimID (which uses web technologies such as OpenID and MicroFormats) or alternatively feel free to do what Toby did and borrow my source code. But be sure to link back to me somewhere (just in the source is fine), and leave a comment letting me know who you are. And if you’re reading this, why not follow me on Twitter?
