I am now a proud owner of a black 8GB iPhone 3G. I’ve been using it for a few days, and so decided to give my first impressions.
I was spurred on to get an iPhone 3G as an upgrade from my Nokia N73 after being exposed to the RDF by x5315 – in the form of his iPhone 2G and Apple’s conference about the iPhone 3G. Also, I was kinda bored with Nokia’s offerings; don’t get me wrong, I loved my N73, but they seem to do the same thing all the time, and I wanted a decent Internet platform – because all my previous phones weren’t that great for browsing the Internet etc. and were also on contracts with no inclusive browsing. I found myself often thinking ‘if only I had the Internet on my phone’ when I wanted to randomly look something up, or for something to do on a train, or to check my email on the move. I also really didn’t like the offerings from HTC, my Dad recently got a TyTyn II and I didn’t like the user environment at all. I needed something that worked really well as a phone (particularly for texting), as well as a great Internet platform. Read the rest of this entry »

While I wait for itunes to update to version 8 I thought I’d take some time to try out the Wordpress app for iphone. It also gives me a chance to practise typing, something I probably need considering i’m quite a heavy texter (hell I went for the unlimited text bolt-on for an extra £7.50). I think I’ll get the hang of it, though I’ll probably find myself missing my T9 dictionary input…

Poor quality I know, but this is my girlfriend’s iPod Touch (fresh with the 2.0 update) successfully on the L2TP/IPSec VPN I set up some months back to test with x5315’s iPhone, showing the Tombraider (my server) home page. At some point (probably when I get my iPhone) I will do a detailed(ish) tutorial on setting up your own L2TP/IPSec VPN to use with your iPhone (using open source software only).
Click the more link for updated screenshots from the Touch itself.

MobileChat released in AppStore
MobileChat gives IM persistence by handling all your IM connections on their servers. This is nice, and I’m sure they aren’t evil, but as Dave Wiskus mentions, their servers are being hit hard as a result. What I’d like to see developed is an IM bouncer (like bitlbee but that is IM-to-IRC whereas I’d like something that stays as IM) that can then be coupled with an iPhone app. It could be done with bitlbee and an IRC bouncer and an IRC client for the iPhone that does good private messaging. Colloquy for the iPhone could potentially do the last two parts, has anyone tried it?

Dear Apple: Please Make the iPhone’s Native Interface Like the Remote App. « The Small Wave.
Interesting points, it definitely seems like more features/time have gone into the remote app than the native interface, one can only hope that these remote.app features are backported into the native interface.
