The “Free Public WiFi” SSID seems to be everywhere – at airports, on planes, and in hotels. Based on what the SSID spells, it seems to be the perfect solution for those seeking to connect to the Internet because it is “Free”…cost nothing…”Public”…you break no laws connecting to it…”WiFi” …a few clicks and you’ll be surfing in no time.
Well this answers everything. I had wondered everytime I got on a train.

Google Chrome’s history search feature is a little too good
It indexes HTTPS pages as well as standard HTTP pages, meaning if you use online banking on Google Chrome (and don’t use incognito mode, and lets face it, you’re bound to forget one day, and shouldn’t need to use a special mode for online banking) all the text on the pages will be remembered, like account numbers, balance, etc. and someone with access to your computer/Chrome’s files could use the history search feature to find these things out.
I haven’t tried it myself, but Bit-Tech have verified it in their column about Chrome, and I trust them to be correct.

At home I run a virtual machine as a nameserver for my network (and my VPN). Technically it runs two DNS servers; BIND for local queries (.haven.network) and djbdns (specifically dnscache) on a separate IP address for everything else. Previously, I have always used my ISP’s (BT) nameservers for forwarding, and since using dnscache I have been querying the root servers directly (dnscache by default seems to recommend this, even though I’m pretty sure it’s bad practice).
Recently, a very significant DNS threat has come to light, and one of the recommendations was to use OpenDNS as your forwarder if you cannot patch yourself. As I was using dnscache, I wasn’t vulnerable to the threat, however it did make me take a closer look at OpenDNS than I had when it was first launched. And now I’ve been using them as my primary forwarders for a week, I thought I’d talk about how I’ve got on. Read the rest of this entry »

I finally understand what OpenID is about, and it seems pretty cool, and phpMyID certainly makes me feel better, as the only person I have to trust with my username & password is myself! If only all sites used this, I wouldn’t have to worry about insecure sites storing my passwords…
Also, this should appear on Twitter.
