As if in response to my mention of SSDs and how operating systems could do with being optimised for them:

I don’t agree with the Vista bashing. But the Engadget comments are a bit rubbish too. As I said before I think operating systems could do with taking some consideration into SSDs when using them, and not use them the same as they do mechanical drives.

Bit-Tech: OCZ SSD vs. VelociRaptor

The result? As I expected - the SSD beats by a small margin on read performance, but is way behind on write performance (by 130MB/s). If/when they come down in price to a similar price to mechanical drives, they will be a nice thing to have for storing fast-read data, such as operating system files and games. It would be nice for operating systems to have a ‘optimised for SSD’ option in the future where they put all the ‘pretty much read only’ files on the SSD, and the rest on mechanical (longevity issues currently really cripple SSDs)
