I upgraded tumble*jalada (which is running on a server running Lighttpd) to WordPress 2.7 on release, and everything seemed to be OK – the upgrade was actually very quick and easy. I had set up my WordPress installation to use SVN so it was a one line svn sw command.

However I had a problem, scheduled posts stopped working. I knew from previous problems with scheduled posts that they are produced by wp-cron.php running for requests to the blog and if the time has gone past for the scheduled post to be posted, it causes it to be posted. I took a look in my lighttpd log file, and discovered this error was being produced by wp-cron.php being accessed:

2008-12-16 13:04:56: (request.c.1110) POST-request, but content-length missing -> 411

x5315 and I have recently moved our blogs to our own VPS hosted at Xen Europe, and due to the limited RAM available (256MB) we decided to experiment with using Lighttpd in place of Apache, because it’s meant to be easier on the RAM and faster – even for dynamic sites like WordPress. Lighttpd is missing a few Apache compatibilities though, and one of the biggest is .htaccess. Lighttpd handles URL rewrites through the ‘mod_rewrite‘ Lighttpd module, and rewrites are added to the main config file (or included in). However mod_rewrite for Lighttpd does not provide the full functionality of Apache rewrites, so instead mod_magnet can be used (even without mod_rewrite, thanks Robert) to perform the rewrites for WordPress.

WordPress 2.6.1 is out, and I took the opportunity to switch to SVN for my WordPress installation which should make upgrading even quicker next time.

I’ve adjusted the header for the blog today – made it a lot more compact. Overall the blog now feels very compact – which is the intention; I wanted there to be a very small amount of space before you hit actual content. It will no doubt cause a 100% bounce rate, but as it’s a tumblelog I’m not too bothered by that. The only problem is now I have no ‘About’ page, and I’d like there to be a link to one (or at least some information about me) somewhere. I’m thinking of adding a hand-drawn style arrow from the ‘jalada’ in ‘tumble*jalada’ from the word ‘who?’ also in a hand-written style, and placed off to the edge of the blog. Clicking it would cause some sort of AJAX popup or something. The only problem is making it obvious the ‘Who?’ is a link.

I just want to aim for a very minimal feel, and ideally want to keep the blog to just one ‘page’ right now.

Suggestions?
